Score 8 Band in IELTS Reading Test

In my last post I mentioned clearly the "6 Steps Kill Programme" that most of the IELTS aspirants follow and ruin their score. In this post I will discuss all their steps and consequences with the solution part. So the six most common steps are as:

A. 98% candidates straightly go the questions section.
Result: They know nothing about the test contents. So, when they get to read the passages they go blank at certain points.
Solution: DO NOT go to the questions section first. Instead, read the title of the passage and go through first few lines of the passage so that you know about the theme of the topic. In this manner you can have a clear vision of your passage. It will help you later when try to study and understand the questions.

B. They start reading the questions.
Result: They are terrified with the questions as they lead them to nowhere.
Solution:You must have a basic idea about the direction where the questions are designed to lead you to.

C. They attempt the questions one by one in the given order, i.e. question 1 to question 40.
Result: They get stuck with a question and waste most of their precious time.
Solution:  Break the sequence. Choose your battles. I mean you need to choose which questions to answers first. Basically, you are advised to attempt these questions in the order of your convenience. In this way you can come to the hard questions later. It will save your time and boost your efficiency.

D. They underline most of the words in the questions and then in the paragraph.
Result:  Very soon the passage is full of waste words. When you attempt a question, the key words associated to that question become meaningless to other questions. But you keep on underlying the entire passage. This habit is suggested by most of the coaching centers. Due to this so-called trick, students are puzzled by these unnecessary key-words.
Solution: Avoid underlying all or most of the words in the questions and the passage. Use eraser simultaneously.

E. As soon as they get stuck with a question, they start feeling the panic attack.
Result: You starting losing the grip of the test. Soon the situation becomes out of control.
Solution: Focus on your breathing pattern. Inhale-exhale. Breath normally and start the question with a new attitude. Read the question 2-3 times and divide that question in some part. Now you can handle each part at a time.

F. They land in trouble guessing every question's answer they find hard.
Result: This method takes less time. So, most of the candidates use it. It is just like a crash landing but just guessing does not work every time.
Solution: You have to be careful as the wrong answers are very easy to find in the passage and hitting the fluke can lead you to a very bad score.

Why You Score Less in IELTS Reading Test

It has always been a very challenging task to get 8 band score in IELTS reading test. Many candidates complain about two painful issues which have been mentioned below.

1. The test is very time consuming.
2. Questions are not easy to find.

Here is my word, "DO NOT bang your head against the wall". IELTS is not just a test to check your grammar. It is very cleverly designed test that checks your ability of "Reading between the lines".
You will always find it difficult to score good. Let's have a look at how most of candidates attempt the questions in IELTS reading test.

A. 98% candidates straightly go the questions section.
B. They start reading the questions.
C. They attempt the questions one by one in the given order, i.e. question 1 to question 40
D. They underline most of the words in the questions and then in the paragraph.
E. As soon as they get stuck with a question, they start feeling the panic attack.
F. They land in trouble guessing every question's answer they find hard.

Are you doing the same???

This 6 step approach kills their score. Actually, this is the most common way to attempt the reading test in IELTS exam. Specifically, the candidates who have no or less experience doing this test with proper tips and tricks are very likely to bang it. The result is quite predictable, a 5 or 5.5 band score.
This leads them to the bitter taste of failure. They start losing confidence and soon find themselves blaming and cursing their poor English for this.

Believe me when I say, "You still can do it".
The only way you can achieve good score is by  "Plugging the holes". Until you know about your weaknesses, you can not make it. You need my help and I am always their to help you out with that.
